IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample Question and Answer

SAMPLE Question

Global languages have many benefits and drawbacks; some argue they are necessary for cooperation and advancement, while other say they are harbingers of a future monoculture.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Sample Response

Languages are generally as old as human and in several cases have undergone similar developmental stages from the archaic and faced out languages to the most recent and revised form of communications. Evidently the debate and the benefits and adverse effects of global languages; where some say that it’s important for advancement and co-existence on one part and the other that it will eventually lead to a world of monoculture on the other part is not just worrisome but deserve a closer attention. In this writing, I shall employ viable and valid explanations examining each view base on its merit and thereafter draw a conclusion by taking a stand.

Firstly, there is the argument that global Languages are necessary for cooperation and advancement. Languages especially verbal are the most crucial aspects of communication; it is no longer news that most multi-nationals and fourth world industries hire people considering the number of languages wherein they are proficient. Illustratively, English Speaking countries like the United Kingdom, the United States of America and even Canada requires non-native English speakers who are seeking for employment and possibly admission into their schools to write a compulsory English Proficiency Exam (s) like the IELTS, GRE, TOEFL etc. to affirm their ability to interact in standard English Language. Base on the explanations and illustration given here, it’s clear that global languages are very relevant and needed for cooperation and advancement.

Again, on the other hand, some have the notion that global languages are harbingers of a possible future monoculture. History can actually be repeated if the conditions that led to such event in the past are repeated. Additionally, it should be noted here that language is just an integral part of culture and does not in any way represent culture. However, modern day research findings have it that people tend to behave (a shift in their original culture) more seemly in languages through which they interact. This is one of the reasons why people from third world countries have great influence over the “under developed countries”. Overall, if necessary actions are not taken; yes, it could be possible that global languages would eventually lead to monoculture.

Conclusively, I strongly agree that global languages will boost and enhance cooperation between people and culminate in advancement. Though, as the saying goes “everyone is entitled to his opinion”, but I believe when people are taught the right thing the society, people and world at large will experience progressions.
