IELTS Matching Headings Question Type

The IELTS Matching Headings Question type is very unique in its style, this uniqueness makes it flexible and easy to understand.

Strategies

Do not read the list of headings before starting on the passage
Read the paragraph one at a time, making your passage map notes as you do so
Underline the topic sentence in each paragraph where you find one.
Once you have made your passage map notes for a paragraph, check the list of heading and find the one that matches. Then repeat these steps for the following paragraph.

How to Recognize Matching Heading Questions

The headings will appear in a box, each with a lowercase Roman numeral.

The paragraphs will be labeled with letters, starting with A.

The headings will appear before the passage. They are the only question type to appear before the passage.

One or more paragraph may already be matched with their heading, as an example.

Passage 2- Getting Ready to Read

Matching Heading questions are the only questions type that appears before the passage.

However, do NOT read the the headings until you have read the passage, as there will be several headings that are not correct answers.

Instead, skim the passage, making a passage map or underling the topic sentence in each paragraph where you find one.

Once you have your passage map (or underline topic sentence), check the heading box to find the one that matches. Repeat these steps for the following paragraph.

We will use the Matching Headings questions and the passage on the following pages to practice the strategies outlined above. Read the text before you read the questions. We will work though matching the first two paragraphs and headings together.

Note that unlike all other Reading questions types, Matching Heading Questions appear before the passage that they accompany. We have printed them below to maintain the same sequence you will see on Test Day, but this means that our guidance for dealing with these questions follows the passage.
